What Makes Therapy Work? From “The Truth About Therapy” Series
If you’re in therapy — or considering it — I made this video to help you. I want to demystify and explain the crucial question of what makes therapy work. Most clients don’t ask this question, and few therapists ever bring it up. I wish I’d know the answer when I was in therapy.
If you’re thinking about going into therapy, or wondering why your therapy isn’t going better — this may help. Let me know what you think.

How To Choose a Therapist? From “The Truth About Therapy” Series
Finding the right therapist can be a life-changing proposition for you.
Don’t be afraid to interview more than one. Ask your prospective counselor anything you want to know! About how they work and about how much experience they have… about how long they think therapy should take. Any question is fair game.
And there’s another benefit to asking questions – you’ll see the kind of person they are.
You don’t have to wait to a first meeting to discuss this stuff. Ask any of this on your first phone call. You can tell a lot in 5 or 10 minutes. If the therapist won’t chat on the phone, but instead insists you make an appointment right away, well that tells you something about the kind of person they are. Listen to see whether he or she is formal or easy-going? How flexible is he, how understanding is she? If you decide it doesn’t feel — well, right – then thank them and tell them you have to think about it. Let me know what you think.

Here is a fantastic video where Carl explains his approach. You even get to see Carl briefly in action.
Carl Rogers uses Person Centred approach a humanistic style of counselling. Please dont be biased because it looks a bit dated. Carl Rogers is hugely influential in the counselling and therapy world in fact his techniques are foundational in modern therapy.
I taught a full course in at Counsellor Training Institute based totally in his approach. Basically, all other therapy approaches use his teachings of the “Core Conditions” as the foundation for their approach. He is regarded as the father of person-centred therapy and the whole movement that ensued.
Enjoy……….
Client or person centered therapy posits that positive change can result by providing the patient with unconditional positive regard. This involves providing the patient with empathy, truly understanding their struggles and acknowledging their strengths. By experiencing the therapist as non-judgmental, a safe environment is created that allows the client to explore aspects of themselves they are less comfortable with.
